Ways to Better Health in 2019

physical healthAt Neeser Insurance and Financial Solutions, we believe that your physical health is your most important health.  Yes, your financial health is what we normally focus on, but your physical health impacts every aspect of your life and with a few small changes you can feel better and live longer.  Today, I encourage you to commit to taking just a few small steps to improve your overall well-being.   You don’t have to sign up for a boot camp or totally overhaul your diet, just a little something every day to work towards a better you.  There are four areas that I will touch on, regular physical exams, exercise, diet, and sleep.  Sure there are plenty of other things you can do – but let’s start small!

Physical exams

When was the last time you had a check-up with your doctor, your dentist and your eye care professional? What are you waiting for?!  Make a note right now – as soon as you are finished reading this post, call and get these appointments scheduled. There are many health conditions that can be detected before there are signs or symptoms.  It’s important to find problems early when they are easier to treat and before more damage can be done.  Early detection means less testing, faster intervention, and a healthier you.

Exercise

physical healthHow often do you move your body for the sake of exercise? I am not talking about signing up to run a marathon.  Baby steps!  Consistency is key here – working out hard at the gym one day a week is not as beneficial as taking a few minutes every day.  Instead of always looking for the closest parking space, intentionally chose a space further way to get in extra steps.  Take the stairs instead of the elevator.  Use an app to count your steps, set a daily goal.  Make exercise a priority, schedule it on the calendar just like your other important appointments.  Begin by setting aside just 15 minutes a day.  Find a YouTube for instruction and inspiration.  Try stretching, yoga, hand weights.  Make plans with your partner or friends to take a walk, go bowling – to get moving!  Exercise not only gives you more stamina and flexibility it makes every day tasks like climbing the stairs, carrying groceries or housework easier.

Diet

Again, nothing drastic, but small changes can be a big difference.  How many servings of fruits and vegetables do you get per day?  Both are loaded with antioxidants which helps your body fight disease and infection.  Just start by adding a couple of servings a day.  Spend a little time chopping, slicing and packaging your fruits and vegetables for the week.  Put them front and center in the fridge, so they are the first thing that you see.    Ask friends the share their favorite healthy recipes.  Think about “Meatless Mondays” to increase your consumption of fruits and veggies.   Reduce fried foods, and packaged, processed foods.  Plan ahead, pack your lunch and snacks; you’ll save money too!

Sleep

physical health

How much sleep are you getting every night? When you sleep, your body regenerates and boosts your immune system.  When we don’t get enough sleep, we become tired and irritable.  Lack of sleep even affects our body weight and increases our risk of serious health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.  Try setting a regular bedtime, reduce your caffeine intact during the day, make your bedroom as comfortable as possible.  Lower your bedroom temperature, and leave electronics – cell phones and tables in another room.  Try deep breathing or listening to soothing music to relax.  The quality and amount of sleep we get has a profound affect on our mental and physical health.  Reduce your stress and improve your mood by making sure you get the rest your body needs!

Just like your physical health, your financial health needs regular check-ups too.  Things that worked for you in the past may not be the same things you need today.  Seek out experts, don’t be afraid to ask for advice and make small changes that can have a big impact!
